Functional Nutrition

Some of it you inherited. Some of it you learned. You can still change how both of them play out.

Many people arrive after watching relatives move through diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, memory loss, or digestive problems. Some of those patterns are genetic. Some are habits that were modeled. Both can still be influenced.

The patterns you have watched are not automatically your path.

One of the most common reasons people come into my office is because they have watched a parent or grandparent move through diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, memory changes, or digestive problems that never fully settled. They are clear they do not want the same progression.

You inherit a set of genetic tendencies. Those tendencies are not a fixed outcome. How they are expressed depends on the conditions they live in — meal timing, sleep rhythm, stress load, toxin exposure, and the habits that have been practiced for years. That is the practical side of epigenetics: the daily signals that turn certain pathways up or down.

Some of what shows up in families is genetic. Some of it is habits that got modeled. Both can still be influenced. There is no guarantee the family pattern will stay quiet, but there are also clear factors that can be changed. With or without genetics testing, we can work on those factors.

Genetics testing simply shows which tendencies are actually present so the effort goes to the right places. Daily habits, meal timing, sleep, and stress load determine how those tendencies are expressed right now. Either way, the first step is mapping what is already happening so the next move is specific instead of generic.

A good percentage of the people who come in have watched relatives go through those health struggles and want to prevent the same progression for themselves. Others arrive because they have symptoms whose origin has stayed unclear — constipation, diarrhea, or bowel movements that switch without an obvious pattern; bloating that does not settle; energy that crashes in the afternoon even when fasting blood sugar looks fine; a suspicion of thyroid involvement when only TSH has been checked; or weight that has not moved despite repeated attempts at dieting. After trying a lot of things with little lasting change, it is easy to wonder whether the effort is going anywhere.

I work with both situations. The starting point is the same: look at the tendencies that were inherited, the habits that have been practiced, and the current markers that show what is actually happening now.

    How we work.

    Map your history

We put your timeline, symptoms, what you've tried, and past labs on one page so we can see the whole picture. Start with the free quiz — it takes about 10–12 minutes and helps sort family patterns from habits.

    Choose a useful starting point

We decide what's worth looking into first, and what can wait, based on your story, not a standard panel.

    Observe and adjust

We choose practical changes, watch how you respond and adjust as we go.

Your gut doesn't live in a supplement bottle.

Your digestion is part of your daily life. When it is useful, we look at sleep, meal timing, movement and stress alongside your digestive history, then decide what deserves attention.

The depth is in the gut questions themselves. For constipation, that's not just “more fiber”: it's how often, how long, what changed, what you've tried, and what the stool looks like. That kind of detail is where useful starting points come from.

Kelly Greenway, Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, reviewing labs

    I enjoy the detective work.

I'm Kelly Greenway, a Functional Nutritional Therapy Practitioner (FNTP), Master Restorative Health Practitioner (MRHP), and Board Certified in Holistic Nutrition (BCHN®), with over two decades of functional nutrition.

I like making sense of a person's story from the details they remember and from the objective data we choose to collect. The people I work with have often been at this for a while: years of symptoms, old labs, supplement bottles, elimination diets, and conflicting advice. Some have watched the same patterns in parents or grandparents and want a different trajectory. Others are simply trying to understand symptoms whose origin has stayed unclear.

I'm not a physician and I don't diagnose or treat disease. What I can offer is time and access to labs that show more of the picture than the standard panels most people receive. Appointments are long enough to sit with the full history and the questions that have not yet been answered. Insurance usually requires a specific diagnosis before it will cover a test or a visit focused on that test. This work does not. The plan can follow the questions the history raises rather than stopping at what a diagnosis code allows.

The labs I can order include hormone panels that look at the usual markers and also check whether everyday chemical exposures are affecting the system. Gut tests can show parasites, bacterial overgrowth, and yeast. They can also measure bile acids — the substances the liver makes to help break down fats — and short-chain fatty acids, the compounds gut bacteria produce when they ferment fiber. When bile acids are low, fatty meals often cause bloating or loose stools. When short-chain fatty acids are low, the gut lining and regular bowel movements tend to suffer. These details are not required, but they are available when they will answer a specific question the history has already raised.

Many people continue to see their doctor while we use these tools alongside the tendencies that were inherited and the habits that have been practiced. The two approaches can run side by side. This work simply has room to look further when it is useful.

From there I help map what can still be influenced and what the next stretch of the path can look like, so it is clearer what a version of daily life with more ease might actually require.

Testing is useful when it answers a question the history has already raised.

A result is most useful when I read it alongside your history and how you've already responded to what you've tried. An out-of-range marker or an organism doesn't automatically explain your symptoms. I look at what the pattern suggests, not just what the flag says.

Genetics testing shows which tendencies are present. Other tests show the current conditions those tendencies are living in — gut function, hormone signals, mineral status, blood sugar handling. Cost is always discussed before anything is ordered.
